Seeking Comments on Draft APA Clinical Practice Guideline for the Behavioral Treatment of Obesity and Overweight in Children and Adolescents

Welcome to the comment site Seeking Comments on Draft APA Clinical Practice Guideline for the Behavioral Treatment of Obesity and Overweight in Children and Adolescents .

The American Psychological Association seeks comments from all interested individuals and groups – including psychologists, healthcare professionals, researchers, clients/patients and their families, APA governance members, and the general public – on the draft Clinical Practice Guideline for the Behavioral Treatment of Obesity and Overweight in Children and Adolescents. (See link to draft at left.)

This Clinical Practice Guideline focuses specifically on recommendations related to delivering family-based multicomponent behavioral treatment of children and adolescents ages 2-18 years with overweight or obesity. Given the strong support for this approach as a first-line intervention, the guideline evaluates what is currently known about the conditions that maximize outcomes when delivering behavioral treatment with this population (e.g., optimal duration and components of treatment, demographic characteristics of patients most likely to benefit, etc.). This guideline is based on a systematic review of the evidence (O’Connor, et al., 2016) conducted by Kaiser Permanente Research Affiliates Evidence-Based Practice Center. The intended users of this document include psychologists, other health and mental health professionals, students/ training programs, consumers, families of consumers, policy makers, and the public. The guideline does not offer recommendations related to other possible interventions (e.g., medication or surgery) for children and adolescents with obesity or overweight though this may be an important extension in future work.

This draft was developed by an APA guideline development panel composed of scientists, clinicians, and client/community representatives. Your comments will provide valuable input to the panel as it works to produce the final version of the guideline.

Please review the draft guideline document and associated appendices (links on the left) and then provide comments below. While reviewing the document, please keep these questions in mind and address them in your responses.
